Oxyrhynchus: fragments of wall paintings

In the Roman empire many buildings were adorned with wall-paintings on a scale not known before or after this period. Roman wall-paintings in a classical style are also known from Egypt. However, the custom of decorating houses seems to have been not so common as in other parts of the Roman empire. Roman wall paintings in Egypt have been found in tomb chapels, public buildings including temples and in private houses. Paintings in religious contexts (tomb chapels, temples, house chapels) show sometimes a mixture of Greek/Roman and Egyptian elements. In the Byzantine Period paintings are mainly known from churches and monasteries.
