Ihnasya: plate

"Late Roman C ware" - produced in Asia Minor. The clay of this ware is fine grained and red. There is a large number of fine particles. The ware is common in the East, but does not appear often in Egypt and Cyprus.

This plate belongs to the finest table ware (after glass vessels). It was most likely produced in Asia Minor. Plates and dishes are often intended for the presentation on consumption of food. Plates decorated with Christian motifs might have had a liturgical role.

Late fourth or fifth century AD.
