Abydos. Photo of the original excavation of the graves along the square of Djet

Abydos has been the focus of a number of excavations, beginning with Amélineau in 1895 and continuing today with the German Archaeological Institute. The burials inventoried here are from Petrie's excavations (1921 - 1922) of the subsidiary graves of the funerary enclosures belonging to the First Dynasty rulers Djer, Djet and Merneit. These were published by Petrie in the British School of Archaeology volume Tombs of the Courtiers and Oxyrhinkhos in 1925.
