Welcome to CMII! We're looking forward to meeting you in person soon. Starting a new degree can be challenging, so we have put together the most important information in the list of frequently asked questions below. Please get in touch if you cannot find the answer to your question in this list.

- What happens during induction week?
CMII organises an induction programme for each programme. The programme includes an introductory meeting with the convenor of your MA, a library tour, an IT induction, a workshop for international students and an optional drop-in session with the CMII administrators, if you require assistance with module registrations on Portico. We also organise a welcome party for all CMII students. Most MA convenors and tutors have extended office hours to meet with new students and discuss their module choices.
You will receive an email containing the programme and other useful information before induction week.
- How do I find out which modules I can take?
You can find a list of recommended modules on the website for your MA programme in the structure tab. Many MA convenors also want to discuss your module choices with you before you register them on Portico.
IMPORTANT: For all modules which are outside CMII/SELCS you will need to ask permission from the home department before registering for these modules on Portico.

You must make sure that your modules don’t clash. You can find out when a module takes place on the online timetable by using the custom search function. You should also make sure that your course load is balanced in both terms.
- How do I register for modules?
Once you have formally enrolled at UCL, you need to register your module choices on Portico. The total number of credits must be 180. You must submit all your choices for both terms at the same time and must not register for either more or less than 180 credits.
Part-time students: Please register your choices for the current academic year only.
You can log into Portico yourself and submit your choices or you can see the admin team during the drop-in sessions and they will help you to register. If you want to amend your choices, please also come to see us.student user guide module registrations (pdf)
Once you have selected your courses on Portico you will need also need to enrol in Moodle (add link). Moodle is a learning software which gives you access to materials related to the course (reading lists etc.). Sometimes your course tutor will contact you via Moodle.
Log into Moodle with your UCL user ID and password and use the search function to find your course. You can self-enrol in most courses. Occasionally a tutor sets an enrolment key (password) for their course which they will give you in the first session.
Important: Enrolling in a course in Moodle does not mean that you are enrolled for this course in Portico.
- When should I register my choices on Portico?
Please register your modules as soon as you can. You should submit your choices before the end of the first week of term. Places are given on a first come, first serve basis and priority is given to students from the MA programme to which the course belongs (i.e. MA Comparative Literature students have priority on comparative literature modules).
- How do I get a UCL user ID and password?
Nearly all your electronic with UCL – whether it be checking your college email address, selecting your modules, or downloading lecture notes – is done through your UCL user id and password.
Your userid and password will be issued to you once you have enrolled.http://www.ucl.ac.uk/isd/help.
If you have enrolled, but not know them, you should contact the Information Services (IS) Service Desk as soon as possible.
Changing your password:
UCL passwords expire automatically after 150 days, unless they have been changed.
Warnings are sent to your UCL email address during a 30 day period, prior to your
password being reset. You can change your password on the web, at any time, at
Passwords cannot be issued over the phone unless you are registered for the User Authentication Service, again accessed from the above web link. If you have not registered for the User Authentication Service, and need to be issued with a password, then you will need to visit the IS Helpdesk in person.
- Can I take a module that is not on the list of recommended options?
If you would like to take a module that is not on the list of suggested options, but is relevant to your programme of study, please contact the convenor of your MA programme before registering on Portico.
- I have found a module I really like, but it is for undergraduates – Can I register for it?
Unfortunately you cannot take a module that is only for undergraduate students.
- I can’t decide between two modules – can I try both and make up my mind later?
If you cannot decide between several optional modules, you can attend all of them in the first week of term and decide then. However, it is advisable to register as early as you can and by the end of the first week of teaching at the very latest.
- I registered for a module on Portico, but my choice was ‘rejected’ – what do I do now?
We try to keep class sizes low in order to guarantee the highest quality of teaching. Unfortunately this means that it is not always possible for all students to get a place on the most popular modules. Please consider other modules from the list in case you cannot get your first choice. Once you have decided what you want to do, please go to the admin office who can amend your module selection on Portico.
- Can I attend modules that I have not registered for on Portico?
Some tutors will allow students to audit their courses. Please contact them beforehand to get their permission. You will be expected to attend regularly, do the preparatory reading and participate just like students who take the module for credit. However, you will not submit any coursework and will not get any marks.
- How do I find out where and when my modules take place?
Information about when and where classes take place is available from the online timetable If you want to find out when a particular module takes place, use the ‘custom search’ option. Once you have formally enrolled and have registered your module choices on Portico, they will show up in your personal timetable. Please make sure to check your timetable regularly as rooms might change at short notice.
- What is Moodle and how do I get access?
Moodle of the learning software we use at UCL. Once you are formally enrolled, you can log into Moodle with your UCL user ID and password. You will find a list of links to various moodle sites in which you have been pre-enrolled on the landing page. Most pages also allow you to self-enrol. Use the search function to find the relevant site and click on 'enrol me'. Occasionally tutors protect their site with a password or enrolment key. If this is the case, they will give you the log-in details in the first session.
Moodle is mainly used for the following purposes:
Most modules have a Moodle site where you can access a fuller course description, reading lists and other resources. You can also contact your tutor and the other students via Moodle. You also submit coursework for CMII and SELCS and your dissertationelectronically via Moodle. Our handbook is also on Moodle. The handbook contains a lot of detailed information on your degree programme.
- Who is my personal tutor and what are they for?
At UCL, every student is provided with a Personal Tutor, who takes an interest in them as an individual and who offers guidance on their overall academic progress and personal and professional development.
At the beginning of the academic year your MA convenor will assign you a Personal Tutor who is a member of the academic staff at UCL. You will be expected to meet with your Personal Tutor at least several times during your studies.

It’s really important that you both agree how the relationship is likely to work best.
- What are Student Representatives and how do I sign up to become one?
Student Academic Representatives are elected to represent students’ views to UCL. StARs sit on various committees at a programme, faculty and University level, at which they act as the voice of students, ensuring that UCL takes into account the needs of students in its decision making processes. StARs achieve this through liaising with UCLU and UCL staff to resolve issues.
At the beginning of each academic year we ask each programme to nominate two representatives. Please let Patrizia or Julia know if you would like to become a StAR for your programme. Once you have been appointed we will invite you to various meetings, including School Meetings and the Staff Student Consultative Committees which take place twice per academic year.
- I feel overwhelmed – who can I talk to?
Your first point of contact for questions about the programme, modules, course content etc. should be the convenor of your MA.

Patrizia acts as deolo for postgraduate students and can be contacted for information and advice on UCL's Equal Opportunities policies and practice.
If you have more general questions, for example relating to university policy, procedures and regulations or would like to record changes in your personal and study records, please contact student services.

- Where can I find information about my degree?
You can find more detailed information about your degree programme, including important contacts, deadlines, how to submit coursework in our handbook on Moodle. You can access Moodle once you have formally enrolled.
- What is Portico?
PORTICO is UCL’s Student Information Service. It’s an online system through which
you manage your module selections and contact details with UCL. It is vital this is kept accurate, as any official letters (including your final degree certificate!) are sent to the address listed in PORTICO. Please also ensure that UCL has an up-to-date telephone number for you, in case you need to be contacted. Students should in addition ensure that the Programme Administrator has up-to-date records of their addresses and telephone numbers and those of next-of-kin in case they need to be contacted urgently.
In PORTICO you can:
• edit your own personal data e.g. update your home and term addresses, contact
numbers and other elements of your personal details;
• complete online module registration – i.e. select the modules you would like to study, in accordance with the rules for your programme of study (subject to formal approval and sign off by the relevant teaching department and your parent department);
• view data about courses/modules - i.e. information on courses/modules available
either in your home department or elsewhere to help you choose your optional modules / electives.
• view your own examination results online. (Any continuing student requiring official
confirmation of their results, or any graduating student requiring additional copies
of their transcript, should refer to the information for obtaining an official transcript at:

- I'm new to UCL. Where can I find more information?
UCL Registry deal with admissions, student registrations, tuition fees and central enrolment. You will find a lot of useful information on their webpages for Prospective Students and Current Students. The webpages are updated continuously. - When will lectures start?
The first week of term 1, starting on Monday 24th September, is Induction Week. There will be many introductory activities so it is important that all full-time studentsattend during that week. You should therefore plan to be at UCL every day that week.
Part-time/modular students should attend at least the induction session and are most welcome to attend as many of the Induction Week events during the rest of the week as they can.
- How can the Student Centre help me?
The student centre is the first point of contact for all current student and UCL Alumni enquiries including:
