At MSSL, we are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable working and studying environment for all.
At MSSL we are committed to developing policies at departmental level that support the Athena SWAN Charter for equality in science, which recognises commitment to advancing women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.
UCL has a long history of fighting for equality and diversity, and was famously the first university in 1826 to admit students of any race or religious or political beliefs. Later, in 1878, UCL was the first university to accept women on equal terms with men, and in 1893 it was the first university in England to establish a students’ union.
In 2015, UCL was awarded an Athena Swan Silver Award, and in 2016 became one of only 8 UK universities to be awarded a Race Charter Bronze award, recognising its commitment to promoting equality and diversity at all levels within the university.
The department operates core working hours and provides opportunities for flexible working within UCL’s policy framework. We are proud to be able to say that women are very well represented at senior academic levels – 30% of our professorial staff are female.
