Description

A selection from the following topics will be covered:  

  • Word meaning and the nature of concepts
  • Vagueness and context dependency
  • Linguistics variation in lexical semantics
  • Compositionality
  • Application of set theory  and logical tools in semantics
  • Semantics/pragmatics distinction
  • Kinds of context-sensitivity and pragmatic processes 
  • Types of conversational implicature
  • Pragmatic inference and theory of mind

The intended learning outcomes are:  

  • Understanding of the concepts and issues outlined in the aims of the module given above
  • Ability to form and and evaluate hypotheses in semantics and pragmatics
