Andres Garcia Sampedro, Institute for Liver & Digestive Health (ILDH) (Science/Medicine) ‘Microcosmic Symphony: Unveiling Biliary Tract Cancer's Secrets’ This snapshot showcases an intricate 3D model of biliary tract cancer, cultivated in the lab amidst the embrace of extracellular matrix proteins. This image grants us a unique view of cellular life, painted in grayscale typical of SEM imagery. Within the celestial confines of an ovni-shaped spheroid, we witness a dance of cellular proliferation, with individual cells flourishing on its surface. The sheer detail within this visual piece invites you to explore the hidden cosmos of cancer research.

Jo-Anne Wilson, Respiratory (Science / medicine)  ‘Lung scarring up close’         Within the lung of patients suffering from pulmonary fibrosis there are pockets of thick, heavily scarred tissue which affect their ability to breathe. The scarred tissue is made up mostly of collagen. The environment inside a scarred lung can be emulated in a dish by growing the cells responsible for the scarring, called fibroblasts (blue). Fluorescence microscopy is used to capture images of the collagen they pump out (green).
