Centre for Medical Image Computing, University College London, London, UK
Joseph Jacob qualified in medicine from Imperial College London. He then worked for Médecins Sans Frontières for 2 years in Sudan and India, before training as a chest radiologist in London.
Joe has received successive Wellcome Trust Research Fellowships, his latest being a £2.85M Wellcome Career Development Fellowship, which bagan in March 2024. His computational image analysis group (the Satsuma Lab), based at the Centre for Medical Image Computing and UCL Respiratory Department performs computer-analysis of HiP-CT and clinical CT imaging in chronic lung diseases. The aim of the work is to develop imaging biomarkers of globally important chronic lung diseases to accelerate their early diagnosis. This is prescient given the UK (and impending European) roll out of lung cancer screening programs where participants will manifest subtle early features of lung and cardiac damage. Using HiP-CT insights Joe’s group aims to transform the global focus of respiratory medicine from tackling late stage incurable disease, to focusing on early stage modifiable disease.
