David Abraham is a Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at University College London. He obtained a BSc at Queen Elizabeth College and a PhD at King’s College, London, followed by a research fellowship at the Kennedy Institute for Rheumatology. He was a Medical Research Council (UKRI) Travelling Fellow at UC Berkeley and the Jackson Laboratory in the USA. After returning to the UK, he worked at the National Institute for Medical Research before joining UCL. David heads the Research Department of Inflammation and Rare Diseases at UCL and the Centre for Rheumatology at the UCL Royal Free Hospital Campus. His research focuses on the molecular basis of inflammatory autoimmune connective tissue disorders, particularly systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). His work includes studying and investigating aspects of inflammation, tissue repair, fibrosis, and scarring, with an emphasis on identifying key disease processes, and mechanisms of ageing and senescence. His research employs multi-omics approaches, studies fibroblast heterogeneity, and utilizes advanced models such as organ-on-chip technologies and genetically modified mice to unravel disease pathogenesis and test therapeutic compounds. He has led collaborations with industry leading to translation studies and target validation contributing to clinical trials.
