Perioperative Fellowships
The Perioperative Medicine (POM) Fellowship Scheme at University College Hospital (UCH) welcomes applications from senior anaesthetic trainees, intent on developing advanced training in POM.
Successful candidates will be offered a 1-year fixed term contract to start in either February or August of each year.
Opportunities
This fellowship will be an opportunity to learn from an experienced multidisciplinary team within the field of POM. We have been running our fellowship for years and offer a diverse range of clinical, research and educational opportunities based at our UCH@WMS site.
The unique programme centres around the management of patients contemplating surgery in the pre-assessment clinic, undergoing surgery, in the operating theatre and recovering from surgery in the post-anaesthetic care unit and surgical wards.
Fellows will work alongside the wider POM multidisciplinary team to gain knowledge of cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, psychologist-led post-surgical ICU follow up clinics, ward rounds with geriatricians assessing complex elderly care needs in surgical patients, and the follow-up of all emergency laparotomy patients post PACU discharge.
There is weekly education afternoon, where all fellows develop research / quality improvement projects and partake in a teaching and training programme of the wider hospital community.
Study and research projects
The post provides a personal study budget of up to £10,000 to enable fellows to undertake our MSc Perioperative Medicine, studied alongside clinical duties. Allocated time for research / MSc study is provided within the rota (totalling two full weeks in every nine). The rota is banded at 1A.
Successful fellows will also have the opportunity to undertake a research project supervised by academic staff at the UCL Centre for Perioperative Medicine.
During the programme, fellows will undergo regular professional appraisal, clinical and educational supervision and mentorship by Professor David Walker, Consultant in Anaesthesia, Perioperative & Critical Care Medicine and programme lead.
Candidates must be in possession of FRCA or a recognised equivalent qualification with a minimum of 6-months full-time, level-3 critical care experience.
