The Academic Rep of the Year Awards recognise and celebrate the exceptional efforts of representatives who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to representing students and collaborating with staff to enhance the academic experience.
This award serves as a testament to Solon's unwavering dedication, enthusiasm and proactive approach in striving to improve the educational journey for FMS students and the support they receive in relation to their wellbeing.
Solon recently completed his Applied Medical Sciences BSc and will be continuing at UCL with a Human Tissue Repair MSc from September 2025.
Each year, Academic Reps across UCL are responsible for many changes that make UCL a better place. Nominations are judged on the basis that the rep has worked hard to reflect student views and ensures these are taken into account in decision-making, the rep has proactively sought to work with staff to improve education at UCL, and that the rep's work has resulted in changes which have positively impacted the education of UCL students.
In a letter to Solon, Dean of UCL's Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Mark Emberton, extended his warmest congratulations to Solon and thanked him for his efforts.
As the Undergraduate Faculty Student Representative, some of Solon's responsibilities included supporting learning and communication across the faculty. One example of this was his organisation of the annual talent show “FMS Ignight”, which was supported by enthusiastic students and staff.
The event is intended to develop the student community and encourage interactions between undergraduates and postgraduates - something Solon wishes to see continue long into the future.
Making students feel connected is important, and I am honoured to receive this award for my work in this area. I noticed some Medical Sciences students can feel isolated, so I decided to gather feedback from peers and course reps to help build a stronger sense of community and give students a more joyful experience. My next goal is to complete a social media app that enhances university connections, bringing students together beyond term time and even after graduation.
