Seventy-one life scientists in 23 countries have been elected as EMBO Members, in recognition of their research excellence and exceptional achievements. This year’s cohort consists of 60 EMBO Members in member states of the EMBC, the intergovernmental organization that funds the main EMBO Programmes and activities, and 11 EMBO Associate Members in countries outside Europe. The new members become part of a global community of more than 2,200 life scientists.
“It is a pleasure to welcome the new EMBO Members and Associate Members. Their election celebrates their achievements and creativity. By contributing their unique perspectives and experiences, they will greatly strengthen the network of leading life scientists who are shaping the field,” says EMBO Director Fiona Watt.
Professor Simona Parrinello (UCL Cancer Institute) leads research into the biology of brain cancer, with a particular focus on glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of the disease. Her work examines how the interactions between tumour cells and their surrounding microenvironment drive tumour development, progression and relapse after treatment. By investigating these processes, Simona’s research aims to identify new therapeutic targets and improve outcomes for patients with this highly challenging cancer.
