We are delighted that Dr Supathep Tansirichaiya has received one of the first Spirit awards for Scientific Excellence and Leadership given by UCL’s School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS).

The new awards celebrate students within SLMS who embody the spirit of commitment to academic excellence and positive contributions to the wider community.

Dr Tansirichaiya received his PhD in December for his thesis Investigation of mobile genetic elements and antimicrobial resistance genes in human oral metagenomic DNA.

Primary supervisor Dr Adam Roberts: "Supathep’s award is thoroughly deserved for his dedication to and work on the most pressing public health crisis of our time.

“He did exceptionally well during his PhD and it was a proud moment watching his degree being conferred.

"He worked incredibly hard during his time in my lab resulting in three first-author publications in the antimicrobial resistance field with another two almost ready to submit plus a series of awards for travel and academic excellence - including one from The Anglo-Thai Society for his research.

Many congratulations also go to Catriona Williams, PhD student in our Microbial Diseases department, for winning in the Community Engagement and Citizenship category.

Catie has been part of many public engagment projects, inlcuding the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures - helping to share science and research with the wider world outside UCL.

Student story

Nur Asyura Binti Nor Amdan

"Research at UCL Eastman is very motivating and exciting. Generally speaking, it is not straightforward. Patience, flexibility and hard work are the key of success. I have very supportive supervisors and helpful colleagues which help me a lot throughout my study. What I like most about research at Eastman, it is very flexible."
