Research student Mehmet Davrandi has been announced as one of the runner-up winners of Nature magazine’s inaugural #ScientistAtWork photography competition.
Microbiologist Mehmet accidentally captured the image above whilst using blood agar to grow and observe oral bacteria to better understand dental plaque.
Winners were decided by a panel of Nature journalists and designers, who looked for originality, photo quality, creativity, composition and visual appeal.
Mehmet said: “On this occasion I spread the germs in the wrong way but it was worth the result which reminded me of an Almond Tree at home in Cyprus.
“It's surprising how rare things happen, and really represents how accidental life can be.”
As a winner Mehmet, PhD candidate in our Microbial Diseases Department, has had his photo featured in the magazine and will also receive a full-year’s subscription.
