We were very sorry to hear of the death of Professor Martin Downer at the age of 86.
Professor Downer was the Professor and Head of the Department of Dental Health Policy of the Eastman between 1990 and 1996. During this time he led a successful teaching programme on Dental Public Health.
In addition, with colleagues, he published many papers on aspects of screening for Oral Cancer as well as epidemiological aspects of childhood dental caries.
Prior to his appointment in the Eastman He had been the Chief Dental Officer (CDO) of England (1983-1990). Professor Downer was a graduate of the University of Liverpool and gained PhD and DDS from the University of Manchester.
He received many awards including the Distinguished Scientist Award of the IADR for Behavioural, Epidemiologic and Health Services research.
