The UCL Eastman Dental Hospital and Institute have been awarded £2 million in funding from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in order to support a ground-breaking biomedical research programme in the field of Oral Health & Disease.

The funding is part a £111.5 million award won by the UCLH Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), whose mission is to accelerate the translation of world-leading biomedical research into new treatments for patients.

Dr Stefano Fedele, Head of Department of Clinical Research at the Institute, said: “This is the first time that UCLH BRC funding has been allocated specifically to an Oral Health & Disease Theme.

“Our goal is to deliver innovative clinical research and ensure that our patients can benefit from the very latest treatments and the highest standards of care”.

Under Dr Fedele’s leadership, the Theme will deliver an ambitious, translational research programme in novel diagnostics and therapeutics for a range of oral disorders, which affect all age groups and can cause pain, disfigurement and reduced quality of life.

The programme will focus on oral cancer and precancer, facial pain, chronic oral infections and inflammation, salivary gland and jaw bone disorders and dental caries.

It will run for five years and through investment in staff posts, equipment, and facilities, it will boost the partnership between the UCL Eastman Institute and UCLH Eastman Hospital, and the wider UCL and UCLH.
