All at UCL Eastman were delighted to hear that Nigel Hunt, Professor of Orthodontics*, has been awarded an OBE in the 2017 Queen’s Official Birthday Honours.
Professor Hunt runs one of the largest and most successful postgraduate specialist orthodontic training programmes in Europe.
His translational research in dento-facial deformity is internationally renowned, and has resulted in significant improvements in patient management both in the UK and abroad.
His achievements in patient care, teaching and research were recognised internationally by the 2015 award of Honorary Membership of the World Federation of Orthodontists. This was only the 12th award granted worldwide in the last 20 years by the body which represents orthodontic specialists from over 115 countries.
He has managed to combine these extensive roles with that of being elected Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and has had a major, pro-active influence on standards of specialist Dental Education and assessment.
Professor Hunt's drive to expose and coordinate improvements in the current poor standards of Children's Oral Health in England has also led to him being invited onto numerous steering groups which aim to advance a national oral health strategy.
Director, Professor Stephen Porter, said: “The achievements of Professor Hunt are remarkable.
“He has positioned the Faculty of Dental Surgery as the 'go to' voice on specialist dentistry by Government ministers, the Department of Health, NHS England and Health Education England.
“We would like to offer our sincere congratulations on his appointment to the Order of the British Empire.”
