Please join the Division in congratulating Mr John Skinner on being promoted to Professor of Orthopaedics in the Senior Academic, Research and Teaching Fellow Promotions 2016-17. John's promotion is effective 1st October 2017.

Mr John Skinner

John is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital

(RNOH) NHS Trust. He leads the Joint Reconstruction Unit at Stanmore where he is the Director of Research and Development. He is a Founding Director of the London Implant Retrieval Centre, Immediate Past President of the British Hip Society and an elected member of the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Bone and Joint Journals and is a reviewer for 7 journals. He has given invited lectures in the USA, including the Presidential Guest Lecture at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in 2012. He has also given invited lectures in the UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, Dubai, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Austria and France. 

He studied medicine at Kings College London, University of London (q1988), underwent basic surgical training in London and Norwich and higher surgical training on the RNOH rotation. In 1999 he was appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the UCL Institute of Musculoskeletal Science and was acting Clinical Director and Head of Department from 2001-2004. He was also awarded the prestigious American, British, Canadian (ABC) travelling Fellowship in 2004.

His surgical and research interests focus on the achieving the best possible clinical and radiological outcomes after hip and knee replacement and reconstruction after tumour surgery. He works with joint preservation techniques using cartilage transplantation and Stem cell therapies in damaged joints. He works in multidisciplinary research and clinical teams to optimise patient care and management, to study the influence of implant design, surgical positioning and patient factors on patient outcome. This Research has won awards in the UK and the USA. He has published 165 papers and collaborates with surgeons in 25 countries. This ability to collaborate has resulted in more than 7000 failed implants being sent to the LIRC and has facilitated the themed Research which makes the group world-renowned.

Since 2008, he has chaired the joint British Orthopaedic Association, British Hip Society, National Joint Registry and MHRA Expert Advisory Committee on metal bearing hips. Under his leadership this committee has issued guidance, via the MHRA that is used worldwide to guide surgeons and patients on how to manage these patients and hips. This advice is followed worldwide and applies to 1.5 million patients with metal bearing hips across the globe. In 2012 he gave evidence and advised the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) USA (under oath) on matters related to Metal on metal bearing hips. He was the only non-American called to give Evidence.
