Professor Stephen Porter gave the Triennial Menzies Campbell Lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons of England on the 30 October 2015.
In his lecture entitled “The impact of Social Change upon Oral Health" Professor Porter reviewed the spectrum of changes that have occurred in the UK since the time of John Hunter.
He observed that while lifespan has increased there remain significant echoes of the past such as tuberculosis and socioeconomic deprivation that continue to impact adversely upon the oral health of adults and children.
There remains a need for all oral health care providers to be aware of how societal change may affect the oral health and the health care needs of patients and how they may also enhance the lives of all by targeted public engagement.
