About the National Amyloidosis Centre
We are funded by the Department of Health to provide services for the national caseload of patients with amyloidosis and hereditary periodic fever syndromes.
What is amyloidosis?
Amyloidosis is the general name for the disease where abnormal protein deposits (known as amyloids) accumulate in tissues and organs throughout the body and interfere with their function.
There are various types of amyloidosis. Different proteins are implicated in different types of amyloids. Treatment is now available for most types of amyloidosis, but accurate diagnosis and aggressive intervention are vital.

We provide a comprehensive diagnostic and consultation service for patients with systemic AL, hereditary and wild‑type ATTR, systemic AA, non‑TTR hereditary amyloidosis and localised amyloidosis (not Alzheimer’s disease).
Clinical evaluation can usually be completed over 1‑2 days, during which hospital or hotel accommodation can be arranged. Our investigations include whole body SAP scanning, blood and urine testing, echocardiograms, cardiac MRI and beyond.
Treatment is usually administered at a local hospital or other regional centres in conjunction with the National Amyloidosis Centre. Some cases are managed by us and our colleagues at the Royal Free Hospital.
We also provide patients and their families with counselling and information that may not be available elsewhere.

Information for Physicians
We offer full diagnostic and consultation services for patients with systemic AL, hereditary and wild‑type ATTR, systemic AA, non‑TTR hereditary amyloidosis and localised amyloidosis (not Alzheimer's)
Clinical services
The National Amyloidosis Centre is the world's largest and the only centre in the UK specialising in diagnosis, research, and management of amyloidosis and hereditary systemic autoinflammatory diseases (SAIDs).
The Jack O’Neill Amyloidosis Laboratory provides a range of diagnostic services. This includes DNA analysis of genes associated with hereditary amyloidosis and systemic autoinflammatory syndromes, histology, and proteomic analysis.
We also carry out clinical research and trials to gain insight into the conditions we treat and to try and improve outcomes.
The UK Amyloid Proteomics (UKAMPRO) facility is the only UKAS-accredited clinical proteomics facility in the UK, and the second largest amyloid proteomics facility in the world.

Clinical Services
Our Jack O'Neill Amyloidosis Laboratory provides diagnostic services, including DNA analysis of genes associated with hereditary amyloidosis and systemic autoinflammatory syndromes, and more.
About us
We are the only centre in the UK dedicated to patients with amyloidosis.
The Centre was commissioned by the NHS National Commissioning Group in 1999. It forms part of the UCL Centre for Amyloidosis, alongside the Wolfson Drug Discovery Unit.
Our amyloid practice is the world's largest and most diverse. We have introduced services for patients with hereditary and age-related cardiac amyloidosis. We also provide genetic, diagnostic and treatment services for patients with hereditary periodic fever syndromes.
We are home to the NHS Specialised Services CAPS Treatment Service for children and adults with cryopyrin associated periodic syndrome (CAPS).
