The Division achieved its first Athena SWAN award (Silver) in 2013 for its efforts to remove barriers for its female academic and research staff. Silver awards recognise that action has been taken to remedy previously identified challenges and that these actions have had impact.
In June 2017, we were awarded Silver under the new Charter. This recognizes departments that champion gender equality for all employees, including professional, administrative and support staff. The Division of Medicine was the first UCL department to achieve Silver under these new criteria.
We renewed this award in 2022 and will re-apply for 2027.

We aim to acknowledge, understand, and tackle structural inequities and unjust social power imbalances that affect our communities across the institution. This means recognising how we got here and what needs to be done to ensure equity, inclusion and belonging for those who are not systemically privileged by our society.
