Awards and Recognition of best practice
The Quality Assurance and Enhancement Unit (QAEU) manages a number of schemes which aim to highlight and support excellence and/or commission improvements in the delivery of undergraduate medical education. Please have a look at their website for details of these and consider either applying or nominating a colleague! If you already teach medical students, please create an ASR account so you can review the learning survey feedback from students about their placements in your area. Fellowship with Advance HE
Gain accreditation with Advance HE to demonstrate your sustained commitment to teaching. The Advance HE website provides information on the categories of fellowship and the details of the application process. Successful applicants gain post-nominals to add to their name. Those with an honorary UCL contract can apply for free.
Honorary Titles for Teachers (Trust employees only)
Honorary titles are awarded for exceptional and sustained contribution to teaching on our MBBS or our Masters programmes. These can be applied for by completing the appropriate forms on the UCL Medical School website.
The guidance for application is available to download from this site. All applications require the support of the local undergraduate director of education. For those who wish to apply for the most senior titles (Honorary Clinical Associate Professor) need to complete both the application form (AF) and the Teaching Portfolio (Form TP) for review by UCLMS.
Introduction to Clinical Teaching
This course (formerly called Training to Teach) enables healthcare professionals to develop their teaching skills, focusing on approaches to planning and facilitating teaching and learning in classroom and clinical environments, as well as facilitating opportunistic learning for their students. If you are Royal Free NHS Trust Staff or an HEE Trainee working at UCLH, you can apply for one of the (limited number of) funded place on specific courses. Research
You may wish to undertake research projects in medical education, apply to present at conferences, and submit to journals. If you have ideas for research projects and would like advice and support, talk to your site lead. For more information, have a look at the Research at UCLMS webpage:
Academic Qualifications
The MSc in Medical Education is jointly run by UCL Medical School and the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). It is a 3 year course, building to an MSc, although participants can leave with a Postgraduate Certificate after 1 year, and a Postgraduate Diploma after 2 years. The course involves a mixture of attendance days at the RCP in London, and self-directed learning, with assessed written assignments. Further information can be found on the RCP site:
The MSc Health Professions Education offers an exciting interprofessional programme that has been designed by UCL Medical School to meet the needs of practitioners of all disciplines involved in the education and training of medical, nursing and other healthcare staff.
