MBBS Year 6 Programme
An overview of MBBS Year 6
Preparation for Practice
The final year prepares you for entry into the Foundation Year 1 programme as a UCL Doctor - knowledgeable, decisive and practical; able to work in teams; aware of patients’ needs; and of your own limitations.
Year 6 places professionalism and patient-based student-led learning at its heart in a series of 3 placement-based modules designed to ensure that you think and act like a doctor, master key practical procedures in real clinical settings, and demonstrate impeccable patient-centred professionalism. You will be encouraged to integrate your prior learning in biomedical and human sciences with all your clinical experience and apply it to management. You will continue to maintain a portfolio of workplace-based assessments and required course work.
Modules A and B provide clinical opportunities in all areas of practice (medicine, surgery, specialist practice, emergency care, chronic care, general practice) and an assistantship sharing the work of a named FY1. Opportunities are also provided in obstetrics and gynaecology, child health and mental health, as these specialities are included in the final MLA AKT and CPSA. Clinical and Professional Practice themes and skills are fully integrated into these placements.
Module C provides Preparation for Practice and an Elective of your choice. (Students who are not successful in the final examinations replace Preparation for Practice with an intensive revision and clinical experience period before re-sitting finals.)
The aims of this year are to ensure you have opportunities to:
- think and act like a doctor;
- practise and reflect on the areas that will be of use to you on becoming an FY1 doctor.
Thinking like a doctor:
- You should aim to make evidenced-based clinical decisions that promote patient-centred practice. You will integrate and synthesise prior knowledge of biomedical and human sciences to enhance your interpretation of the patient’s own narrative, physical signs and other clinical and social data.
Acting like a doctor:
- You should be able to demonstrate your professionalism through commitment, time keeping, initiative, respect for colleagues, an understanding of patient safety and the application of ethical and legal principles. You will be able to perform general clinical tasks and specific practical and clerical procedures (including BLS & prescribing) to the level expected of a Foundation Doctor.
This will be achieved through the following modules and assessments:
- Preparation for Practice A (MBBS0073);
- Preparation for Practice B (MBBS0072);
- Preparation for Practice C (MBBS0074);
- Anatomy and Imaging, Clinical Skills, Doctor as a Data Scientist, Pathological Sciences, Use of Medicines (MBBS0046);
- Mental Health, Social Determinants of Health, Clinical Communication, Ethics and Law, Patient Safety, Professionalism (MBBS0051).
- Applied Knowledge Test (MBBS0092)
- Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (MBBS0093)
