MBBS Year 5 Programme
An overview of MBBS Year 5
The Life Cycle and Specialist Practice
The theme of Year 5 is “the life cycle” and you will encounter patients with medical conditions from across the “seven ages” of man. An Introductory and Orientation Module is followed by three, twelve-week integrated modules of clinical placements each preceded by related core teaching and relevant NHS mandatory training.
A large part of the year is dedicated to beginnings of life, through women’s and men’s health, sexual health and child health. In addition, you will learn about family and adult health and behaviour through general practice, breast services, urology, psychiatry, dermatology and ophthalmology.
The latter parts of the life cycle will be explored in care of the older person, cancer medicine and palliative care.
Clinical and Professional Practice themes continue in teaching and learning sessions covering a wide range of topics relevant to the life cycle and specialist practice, and a patient-based patient pathway which runs throughout the year.
Career planning, preparation for your Foundation School application and planning your elective become important in year 5 and advice about these are provided during the IOM.
The aims of this year are:
- to build on clinical knowledge and skills developed in year 4
