Prize for academic and extra-curricular achievement - John Briffa Prize
Founded by Dr John Briffa who qualified from The University College and Middlesex School of Medicine in 1990.
- A prize known as the John Briffa Prize may be awarded in each session for outstanding academic and extracurricular achievement.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Senior Leadership Team.
- Potential prize winners must be nominated by a member of staff or final year student. Canvassing for nomination will disqualify.
- Nominees must be final year medical students.
- Nominations must be submitted to MBBS Management via medsch.year6@ucl.ac.uk by 16th May.
- Nominees will be invited to submit a statement setting out:
- Prizes or other evidence of academic distinction in the MBBS and iBSc
- A brief description of any interesting research you have been involved in or papers published
- One piece of written feedback received during the course which you would most like the assessors to read
- Sporting or athletic achievements/contributions
- Musical or dramatic achievements/contributions
- Outreach, community, caring or charity work
- Any "political" activities or achievements (e.g. Students’ Union or medical politics such as the BMA)
- A brief description of any relevant entrepreneurial achievements, eg the organising of functions or other managerial/administrative duties
- A list of up to 3 items which you regard as your major contributions to the life of the Medical School
- Anything else you would like the assessors to know (not more than 50 words)
- The closing date for submission of the statement will be 28th May via medsch.year6@ucl.ac.uk.
- Submissions are reviewed by a panel of 3 drawn from the Divisional and MBBS Tutors and recommendations submitted to the MBBS Senior Leadership Team for award.
- The value of the prize is £300.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The award will be announced in June.
Prize for contribution to Medical Education –Professor Dame Jane Dacre Prize
Professor Dame Jane Dacre is a consultant rheumatologist and former President of the Royal College of Physicians. She was the first female Director of UCL Medical School between 2010 to 2014.
Throughout her career she has advocated for improving education of students and doctors. This prize was established in 2020 for final year students who have made an outstanding contribution to undergraduate medical education.
- A prize known as the Professor Dame Jane Dacre prize may be awarded in each session for outstanding contribution to medical education, including excellence in educational innovation and scholarship (e.g. submitting work to conferences or for publication) demonstrated during the student's time at UCLMS.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Senior Leadership Team.
- Potential prize winners must be nominated by a member of staff or final year student or senior elected student representatives. Canvassing for nomination will disqualify.
- Nominees must be final year medical students.
- Nominations with a brief outline of contributions and achievements must be submitted to medsch.year6@ucl.ac.uk by 16th May.
- Nominees will be invited to submit a statement setting out their achievements in and contributions to:
- Medical education scholarship and research
- Conferences and publications
- External prizes and awards
- Sustained support for teaching and learning for UCLMS students
- Outreach and widening participation activities
- Any formal positions held relating to medical education (e.g. RUMS Vice President Education)
- A list of up to 3 items which you regard as your major contributions to medical education
- Anything else you would like the assessors to know (not more than 50 words)

Prize for contribution to enhancing the Student Experience –Professor Deborah Gill Prize
Professor Deborah Gill was appointed as Director of UCL Medical School in 2015 and as UCL’s Pro Vice Provost, Student Experience from 2019 to 2021.
She qualified in medicine in 1990 from The Middlesex Hospital Medical School and trained as a general practitioner. She began her academic career at UCL in the Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School and joined the Medical School in 2002 as a Senior Lecturer in Medical Education.
She has a long history as an educator, education leader and education scholar involved in a wide range of curriculum innovation and development activities and hgs a strong focus on promoting initiatives to enhance the student experience, augment the student voice and promote partnership working with students across UCL.
- A prize known as the Professor Deborah Gill Prize may be awarded in each session for contribution as a medical student to enhancing the student experience.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Senior Leadership Team.
- Potential prize winners must be nominated by a member of staff or final year student. Canvassing for nomination will disqualify.
- Nominees must be final year medical students.

Prize for Healthcare or Charity Work Abroad – Dr Karen Woo International Award
The Dr Karen Woo International Award for contribution to healthcare work abroad was founded at UCL Medical School in 2022 by Prof Narinder Kapur, in memory of Dr Karen Woo who graduated from the Medical School in 2002. Karen died in Afghanistan in 2010 while working as a doctor for an international aid charity.
- 3 prizes known as the first and second Dr Karen Woo International Awards may be awarded in each session – ideally in low-and middle-income countries - for contribution to healthcare or charity work abroad during the MBBS programme.
- The prizes are awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Senior Leadership Team.
- Potential prize winners must be nominated by a member of staff or final year student. Canvassing for nomination will disqualify.

Prize for greatest contribution to the Medical School – John Glannister Prize
The John Glannister Prize for the greatest contribution to the Medical School was founded at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine as a tribute to the courage of John Glannister, a medical student in the early 1980s, who battled with cancer throughout his final year and died shortly after graduating.
- A prize known as the John Glannister Prize may be awarded in each session for the ‘greatest contribution to the Medical School’.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Senior Leadership Team.
- Potential prize winners must be nominated by a member of staff or final year student. Canvassing for nomination will disqualify.

Prize for extra-curricular activities - Lloyd Bland Prize
The Lloyd Bland Prize was founded at University College Hospital in 1970 by Mrs Betty Bland in memory of her husband, Dr Lloyd Bland.
- A prize known as the Lloyd Bland Prize may be awarded in each session for outstanding contribution to extra-curricular activities.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Senior Leadership Team.
- Potential prize winners must be nominated by a member of staff or final year student. Canvassing for nomination will disqualify.

Prize for Professional Leadership Skills – Dame Clare Marx Prize
Dame Clare Marx was President of the Royal College of Surgeons from 2014 to 2017 and Chair of the General Medical Council from 2019 to 2021, the first woman to hold these roles. She qualified in medicine from University College London Medical School in 1977 and became a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a particular interest in early surgical education.
She chaired the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, which was established in 2011 by all the medical royal colleges as a professional body for the setting and maintaining of standards and whose early aim was to develop Medical leadership as a true professional discipline to be able to deal with the challenges which the health service faces. She has a particular interest in initiatives to address health inequalities.
A prize known as the Dame Clare Marx prize may be awarded in each session to a student who has developed and demonstrated professional leadership skills, in particular in activities focussed on addressing health inequalities.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Senior Leadership Team.
- Potential prize winners must be nominated by a member of staff or final year student or senior elected student representatives. Canvassing for nomination will disqualify.
- Nominees must be final year medical students.
- Nominations with a brief outline of their leadership development, training, skills and achievements must be submitted to medsch.year6@ucl.ac.uk by 16th May.
- Nominees will be invited to submit a statement setting out their skills and achievements in and contributions to:
- Professional leadership development, training and skills
- Leadership of projects and initiatives
- Conferences and publications
- External prizes and awards
- Sustained support for mentoring / supervising UCLMS students
- Outreach and widening participation activities
- Any formal leadership positions held
- A list of up to 3 items which you regard as your major achievements in your development as a future leader in the medical profession
