Year 6 Academic Prizes
These prizes are available in Year 6 of the MBBS Programme.
In 2024/25 students will be invited to submit their MLA AKT scores for prizes for which a breakdown by specialty is needed, as this information will not be issued to the Medical School. Students will be notified when the application form is open and scores submitted by individual students will be verified against individual student feedback which the Medical School can view online, to ensure accurate submission. Prizes for overall performance will continue to be awarded without the need for student applications, on the basis of overall AKT scores provided directly to the Medical School.
Cordwainers Prize
The Cordwainers Prizes are awarded by the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers to the highest performing medical student in the MBBS examinations in Years 5 and 6.
- One award may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest score in the examinations for Year 6 of the MBBS.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £2000.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in June.
Broderip Prize
The Broderip Prize was founded by the Governors of the Middlesex Hospital (1872) with a view to the encouragement of study in Medicine and Surgery in memory of the late Francis Broderip, a munificent benefactor of the Hospital. The Prize was awarded to the highest performing student in the final MBBS Examinations at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School.
- One Prize known as the Broderip Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The Prize is awarded to the student who shows the second greatest proficiency overall in the final MBBS Examinations.
- No application is necessary.

The Atchison Prizes for Clinical Sciences were founded at UCH Medical School in 1878 under a bequest made by Mr Thomas Atchison.

- The Prize is awarded to the student who shows the third greatest proficiency overall in the final MBBS Examinations.

The Atchison Prizes for Clinical Sciences were founded at UCH Medical School in 1878 under a bequest made by Mr Thomas Atchison.

- The Prize is awarded to the student who shows the fourth greatest proficiency overall in the final MBBS Examinations.

The Robert and Diana Dick Prize
The Robert and Diana Dick prize was founded at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1991 by Dr Robert Dick, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at the Royal Free Hospital and Sub Dean for Admissions in the 1980s.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The Prize is awarded to a student classified as overseas for fees purposes for overall performance in the final MBBS examinations and throughout the course.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £125.
- The prize is accompanied by a certificate.

The Betuel Prize
The Betuel Prize was established in 1981 in the memory of Herbert William Normal Betuel by his wife and was originally awarded to the student who achieved the highest mark in the University of London Final MBBS examinations.
The prize was offered to UCL Medical School in 2014 and is awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark in the Medical Licensing Assessment Applied Knowledge Test.
- One award may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the University of London Convocation Trust on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest score in the Medical Licensing Assessment Applied Knowledge Test.
- Students will be invited to submit their breakdown of MLA scores by specialty as provided in their MLA feedback if they wish to be considered for this prize, as specialty scores are not issued to Medical Schools. Scores submitted for consideration for prizes will be verified against individual candidate feedback, which the Medical School can view.

Established by an endowment to fund prizes in clinical science.

- The prize is awarded to the student who shows the greatest proficiency overall in the clinical section of the MBBS examination.

Hetley Clinical Prize
The Hetley Clinical prize was founded at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School by the late Dr Frederick Hetley (1884).

Geoffrey Chinnock Jones
The Geoffrey Chinnock Jones Memorial Prize in Haematology/Pathology was founded at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School by Mr and Mrs J R Chinnock Jones in memory of their son, the late Dr G Chinnock Jones.
The Lucy Chaplin Memorial Prize in Pathology was founded at University College Hospital School of Medicine.
Awarded jointly from 2004 following the merger of the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine with the University College and Middlesex School of Medicine

Philip Seth Belasco Prize
The Philip Seth Belasco Prize in Medicine was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1959 in memory of Philip Seth Belasco.

The Natalie Bogdan Prize in Medicine was founded at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1977 by Mr JP Hopewell in memory of Natalie Bogdan.

Charlotte Brown Prize
The Charlotte Brown Prize was established as a prize for the surgical treatment of tuberculosis. The prize is now now awarded on the basis of performance in Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases including contemporary therapies and management of tuberculosis.
- One Prize known as the Charlotte Brown Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in topics relating to Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases in the Medical Licensing Assessment Applied Knowledge Test. Marks achieved may be used in the event of a tie.

Hobbiger Prize
The Hobbiger Prize was founded in 1987 in honour of Professor F. Hobbiger, Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School (1949-1985).
- One Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in the national Prescribing Safety Assessment. Marks achieved in the clinical stations related to prescribing in the final MBBS examinations may be used in the event of a tie.

Wishart Lyell Prize
The Lyell Prize in Surgery was founded in memory of the late Robert Wishart Lyell (1882), Assistant Surgeon to the Middlesex Hospital.
- One Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Surgery in the Medical Licensing Assessment Applied Knowledge Test. Marks achieved in the examination overall may be used in the event of a tie.

William Henry Rean Prize
The William Henry Rean Prize was founded by the late Miss A P Rean in memory of Surgeon General W H Rean who began his career as a house surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital in about 1850, as an award for the most promising young doctor.

- The Prize is awarded for personal qualities shown in patient care during the student's career, currently determined by marks achieved in clinical stations relating to Clinical and Professional Practice in the final MBBS Examinations. Archibald Ferguson Prize
The Archibald Ferguson Prize was founded at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1985 as an award for personal qualities shown in patient care during the student’s career. The bequest was made by Mary Elizabeth Hopkin in honour of her great grandfather.

Chadwick Prize
The Chadwick Prize commemorates the work of Edwin Chadwick, a founder of University College London and a leading figure of the Public Health Movement in the nineteenth century.

- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Epidemiology and Public Health in the final MBBS examinations.

1st Sheila Sherlock Prize
The Sheila Sherlock Prizes were founded in 2006 in memory of Professor Sheila Sherlock (born 1918, died 2001) with a donation from her husband Prof. Geraint James.
Professor Dame Sheila Sherlock FRS was Professor of Medicine at the Royal Free Medical School from 1960-1983. Her work at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and subsequently at the Free was central to the creation of the discipline of Hepatology, and for decades she was the world’s best recognised liver doctor and the most famous female physician.
She was a tireless clinician and clinical researcher, and an indefatigable supporter of her students and trainees, many of whom moved on to head academic departments world-wide.
- One prize known as the 1st Sheila Sherlock Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The Prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest number of distinctions and certificates of merit in the MBBS programme. In the event of a more than one student achieving the same number of distinctions and merits, the prize will be awarded to the student who has gained the higher overall mark in finals.
