Year 5 Academic Prizes
These prizes are available in Year 5 of the MBBS Programme.
Atchison Prize
The Atchison Prizes for Clinical Sciences were founded at UCH Medical School in 1878 under a bequest made by Mr Thomas Atchison.
- One award may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest score in the examinations for Year 5 of the MBBS.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £1000.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in June.

Established by an endowment to fund prizes in clinical science.
- One prize known as the Kershaw Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The prize is awarded to the student who shows the greatest proficiency overall in the clinical section of the MBBS examination.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £800.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The Prize will normally be awarded in June.
Sughra Khanam Ahmad Prize
The Sughra Khanam Ahmad prize for Care of the Older Person was founded at UCL Medical School in 2022 by Dr Riaz Ahmad, who graduated from UCL, in recognition of his mother and the insights into dementia he and his family gained while caring for her.
- One prize known as the Sughra Khanam Ahmad Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Care of the Older Person in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in psychiatry the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the Prize is £500.

Sarkany Prize
The Sarkany Prize was founded at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1982 with a donation from Smith & Nephew, and renamed after Dr Sarkany in 1992 in recognition of his work in Dermatology.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Dermatology in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.

Adler Prize
The Adler Prizes for Undergraduate Excellence in HIV and GU Medicine were established at UCL Medical School in 2010 for a 10 year period by donation from Gilead Science with 3 awards made annually.
The prizes are named in recognition of Professor Michael Adler for his pioneering work in the academic field of HIV and GU Medicine. Professor Adler set up the UK’s first academic department for the study of sexually transmitted diseases; was the Chair of GU Medicine at UCL Medical School from 1974 to 2004; President of the National Society for the Study of Venereal Diseases from 1997 - 1999; and led the development of the UK national strategy for sexually transmitted diseases.
From 2021 the Medical School has funded one prize annually to enable its continuation.
- A Prize known as the Adler Prize may be awarded each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The Prize is open to students from any country undertaking the Women’s Health and Men’s Health module (WHMH).
- Selection of the winner is based on performance in questions relating to HIV/GUM in the end-of-year examinations. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £100.

Freeman Prize
The Freeman Prize for proficiency in Obstetrics & Gynaecology was founded at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School by the late H W Freeman, F.R.C.S.I.
- One prize known as the Freeman Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.

Ursula Shelley Prize
The Ursula Shelley prize for Paediatrics was founded at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine.
- One prize known as the Ursula Shelley Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Paediatrics in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.

Helen Webb
The Helen Webb Prize for encouraging knowledge of child diseases was founded at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1926 by Jessie Crosfield in memory of Dr Helen Webb.
- One prize known as the Helen Webb Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the second greatest proficiency in Paediatrics in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.

Rodney Taylor Apothecaries Prize
The Society of Apothecaries offers a prize each year to each of the 5 London Medical Schools. Each School is invited to nominate a prize winner based on criteria of their choice. The prizes are known as The Rodney Taylor Apothecaries Prizes and the value of each prize is £100.
At UCL Medical School, the nomination is awarded for prescribing skill in COOP and specialist care on the basis of examination performance in questions relating to COOP, Cancer and Ophthalmology in Year 5 Module C.
Bernard Hart Prize
The Bernard Hart Prize was founded in 1969 under the will of Dr Bernard Hart, Physician in Psychological Medicine to University College Hospital, 1913-47.
- One prize known as the 1st Bernard Hart Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Psychiatry in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.

The Bunzl Prize in Pyschiatry was founded at the Royal Free School of Medicine in 1980 by a donation from Mr G.G. Bunzl.

- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the fourth greatest proficiency in Psychiatry in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.

A W Beard Prize
The A W Beard prize was founded at The University College and Middlesex School of Medicine in 1991 by Dr R D Fine in memory of Dr A W Beard.
- One prize known as the A W Beard Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the fifth greatest proficiency in Psychiatry in the MBBS examinations in Year 5. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.

Dr Katharina Dalton, Mary Swann and Evans
The Dr Katharina Dalton Prize was founded in 2006 by the PMS Help Charity in memory of Dr Katharina Dalton for her lifelong work in researching premenstrual syndrome and gynaecological endocrinology. Dr Dalton qualified from the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in 1948.
The Mary Swann prize in Gynaecology was founded at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1926 by Mrs Edith M. Swann in memory of her daughter.
The Evans prize in Obstetrics was founded at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine.
- Three equal prizes may be awarded in each session known as the Katharina Dalton Prize, the Mary Swann Prize and the Evans Prize.
- The Prizes are awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Module Lead for Women’s Health and Men’s Health.
- One prize is awarded in each of three modules to the highest performing student in the team which achieves the highest score for a project presentation relating to Women’s Health in Year 5. Selection is based on performance in questions relating to Women’s Health in the end-of-year examinations.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of each Prize is £150.
- Each award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in August.
