Year 4 Academic Prizes
These prizes are available in Year 4 of the MBBS Programme.
William Marsden Scholarship
Founded jointly in 1978 by the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research to mark the 150th Anniversary of the founding Royal Free Hospital, and named in commemoration of the surgeon William Marsden (1796-1867) who founded both the Royal Free (in 1828) and the Royal Marsden (1851).
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Royal Free Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who achieves the highest score in the examinations for Year 4 of the MBBS programme.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £1000.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The awards are announced in August.
Magrath Prize
The Magrath Prize was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1912 by Mrs F Magrath, and was originally awarded for proficiency in reports on cases at the bedside.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who achieves the second highest score in the examinations for Year 4 of the MBBS programme.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £800.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The awards are announced in August.
Magrath Prize
The Magrath Prizes was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1912 by Mrs F Magrath, and was originally awarded for proficiency in reports on cases at the bedside.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who achieves the third highest score in the examinations for Year 4 of the MBBS programme.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £500.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The awards are announced in August.
University College Hospital Medical School Prize
The University College Hospital Medical School Prize was established in 2020 to enable the continuation of a number of awards for academic excellence bequeathed to the University College Hospital Medical School prior to the merger with The Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1989 and whose funds had ceased to generate sufficient income to fund their prizes. Continuation of the prizes is possible through bequests by Lydia Harley and Robert Adolf Kaye for general purposes. The original prizes were bequeathed by or in memory of:
- Robert Liston, prize founded at University College Hospital in 1853 by subscriptions to a testimonial in honour of Professor Robert Liston and awarded as a prize for Surgery.
- Sir William Gowers prize was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1955 under a bequest from the late Sir William Gowers and awarded as a prize for Clinical Pharmacology.
- William Tuke, prize founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1884 by Dr Hack Tuke in memory of his son, William Tuke, a student of University College, and awarded as a prize for Pathology.
- F.T. Roberts, prize founded at UCH Hospital Medical School in 1926 by Mrs F.T. Roberts, widow of Dr F.T. Roberts, Physician to University College Hospital.
- Whittet, prize founded at University College Hospital Medical School in memory of Dr T. D. Whittet.
- Cuxson Gerrard, founded under a bequest to University College Hospital Medical School, originally awarded for performance in Pharmacology in Part II of the MBBS degree course, awarded for IBSc from the introduction of the integrated curriculum in 2020.
- Dr R Kohn, founded under a bequest to University College Hospital Medical School for performance in Pharmacology, awarded as an IBSc prize from the introduction of the integrated curriculum in 2020.
- The Suckling Prizes were founded at UCH Medical School in 1936 by Mrs A M Suckling in memory of her son, John Jerome Suckling, a student of University College Hospital Medical School and awarded for proficiency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who achieves the fourth highest score in the examinations for Year 4 of the MBBS programme.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £250.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The awards are announced in August.

The Kershaw Prizes were established by an endowment to fund prizes in clinical science.
- One prize known as the Kershaw Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The prize is awarded to the student who shows the greatest proficiency overall in the clinical section of the MBBS examination.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £800.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The Prize will normally be awarded in June.
Fellowes Prize
The Fellowes Gold Medal in Medicine was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1837 by the Reverend Robert Fellowes LLD.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Medicine in the MBBS examinations in Year 4. Overall marks in the examination may be used in the event of a tie.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £150.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in August.
Harold Boldero Prize
The Harold Boldero Prize in Medicine was founded in 1957 by subscription in honour of the late Sir Harold Boldero, Dean of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The award is made to the student who shows the second greatest proficiency in Medicine in the MBBS examinations in Year 4. Performance in the examination overall may be used where candidates achieve equal scores.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the Prize is £100
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in August.
Dr Isobel Porritt Beswick Prize
- One prize known as the Dr Isobel Porritt Beswick Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Pathological Sciences in the MBBS examinations in Year 4. Overall marks in the examination may be used in the event of a tie.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £200.

Filliter Prize
The Filliter Prize in Pathology was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1859 in memory of Dr William Filliter.
- One prize known as the Filliter Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who shows the second greatest proficiency in Pathological Sciences in the MBBS examinations in Year 4. Overall marks in the examination may be used in the event of a tie.

David Bailey
The David Bailey Prize in Surgery was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1978.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.

- The scholarship is awarded to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in Surgery in the MBBS examinations in Year 4. Overall marks in the examination may be used in the event of a tie.

Erichsen Prize
The Erichsen Prize was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1883 by Sir John Eric Erichsen, B.T., F.R.S., Emeritus Professor of Surgery and Clinical Surgery for the encouragement of skill in surgical manipulation and awarded as a prize for Surgery.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the MBBS Board of Examiners.
- The scholarship is awarded to the student who achieves the second greatest proficiency in Surgery in the MBBS examinations in Year 4. Overall marks in the examination may be used in the event of a tie.
