Year 2 1st Prize for Cardiology – Glynn Morgan Prizes
The Glynn Morgan Prize in Cardiology/Chest Medicine was founded at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1982 in the memory of Dr Glynn Morgan
- A prize known as the Glynn Morgan Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by UCL Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Cardiometabolic Medicine.
- The Prize is awarded to the highest performing student in the year 2 Patient Pathway in Cardiometabolic Medicine on the basis of the module grade and coursework.
- The winner is determined by the Academic Lead on completion of the Patient Pathway and the name is notified to the Year 2 team by the end of May each year.
- The value of the Prize is £400.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is usually be announced in June.
Year 2 2nd Prize for Cardiology – Sir Thomas Lewis Memorial Prize
The Sir Thomas Lewis Prize in Cardiology was founded at University College Hospital Medical School in 1948 from a Memorial Fund to Sir Thomas Lewis collected with the assistance of learned societies and academic institutions. Thomas Lewis graduated from University College Hospital London with the gold medal in 1905 and remained at UCH until the end of his life. He established the clinical research department at UCH and the Medical Research Society and coined the term ‘clinical science’.
- A prize known as the Sir Thomas Lewis Memorial Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by UCL Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Cardiometabolic Medicine.
- The Prize is awarded to the second highest performing student in the year 2 Patient Pathway in Cardiometabolic Medicine on the basis of the module grade and coursework.
- The winner is determined by the Academic Lead on completion of the Patient Pathway and the name is notified to the Year 2 team by the end of May each year.

Year 2 Specialty Prizes in Mental Health – Louis Quail 'Big Brother' Book Prizes
The Mental Health Book Prizes were founded in 2019 drawing on funds for a prize in Psychiatry.
- Two prizes known as the Louis Quail ‘Big Brother’ Book Prizes in Mental Health may be awarded in each session.
- The prizes are awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the CPP Academic Lead for Mental Health and a Mental Health Professional who may consult with Louis Quail to determine the winners.
- The prizes are awarded on the basis of piece of reflective work submitted after the first Mental Health lecture in Year 2 by Louis Quail. The reflective work should take the form of a 500 word reflection or a photo/drawing/poem plus 200 words about their choice and what it signifies.
- Students should submit their work via the Turnitin link provided by the Year 2 Mental Health Course Administrator within 2 weeks of their participation in the lecture.
- Each winner is awarded a signed copy of Louis Quail’s book on his 'Big Brother'.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in January.
Year 2 Specialty Prizes in Public Health - Horace Joules Prize
Established in honour of the late Dr Horace Joules, a graduate of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, physician to Central Middlesex Hospital for nearly 30 years, distinguished teacher and celebrated champion of social and preventive medicine.
- Two equal Prizes may be awarded in each session.
- The Prizes are awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of a panel of representatives from Epidemiology and Public Health.
- The Prizes are awarded annually on the basis of coursework including reflective Portfolio items relating to Public Health submitted in any module completed in year 2 of the MBBS course.
- Candidates who wish a piece of coursework to be considered must send written notice and their chosen coursework to the MBBS Clinical and Professional Practice Team (medsch.cpp@ucl.ac.uk) by the end of April.
- The value of each Prize is £150.
- Each award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award will be announced in June.
Year 4 Specialty Prize in Cancer Medicine - Allen Goldsmith Prize
Founded in memory of the late Sir Allen Goldsmith, K.C.V.O., M.B., B.S., F.R.C.S., Ophthalmologist to the Middlesex Hospital and Medical School.
- A prize known as the Sir Allen Goldsmith Prize may be awarded once every year.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Cancer Medicine.
- The Prize is awarded for the Cancer Medicine portfolio project in year 4.
- Outstanding projects will be selected by all the Cancer Medicine tutors and, if the student wishes to proceed, forwarded to the shortlisting committee, which is constituted by Cancer Medicine teachers.
- The shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a presentation on their projects and a committee of Cancer Medicine teachers will select the successful candidate.
- The value of the Prize is £150.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in June.
- UCL Medical School reserves the right to vary these regulations should it become necessary to do so in order to ensure the continued use of the resources in the fund.
Year 4 Prizes for Reflective Writing – F Stoney Prizes
Established by a bequest from F Stoney for the best medical student essay.
- Two prizes known as the F Stoney Prizes for Reflective Writing may be awarded in each session.
- The Prizes are awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of a panel comprising the Academic Lead for Clinical and Professional Practice, the Divisional Tutor and the Clinical and Professional Practice Clinical Teaching Fellow.
- The Prizes are awarded in Year 4 on the basis of a piece of reflective writing submitted as coursework for the Clinical and Professional Practice programme, with one prize awarded for the first piece of coursework and one for the second.
- Essays are nominated to the panel by the reflective writing tutors by the end of May of Year 4.
- The value of the 1st Prize is £250 and the value of the 2nd Prize is £150.
- The award winners and all nominated candidates will receive a certificate.
- The awards are announced in July.
Year 6 Clinical and Professional Practice Prize – Ethics Prize
Founded as an essay prize at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1993 by Mr John Gibbs in memory of his wife, Dr Jeanne Lister.
- One prize, known as the Ethics Prize, may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of a panel including the Academic Lead for Clinical and Professional Practice, the Academic Lead for Ethics and a third academic member of staff drawn from the Clinical and Professional Practice Modules.
- The Prize is awarded in Year 6 to the student who has made the greatest contribution to the medical ethics component of the Clinical and Professional Practice programme in Years 1, 2, 4 and 5. The prize is determined on the basis of a reflective piece (not exceeding 1000 words) on how students have furthered their own and others’ understanding of the importance of medical ethics in clinical practice.
- Essays should be submitted to the Academic Lead for Ethics, via the MBBS Medical School Essay Prizes page on Moodle. Please see the Moodle page for the date for the current academic year.
- The value of the Prize is £100.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The award will be announced at the end of February.
Year 6 Elective Prize – The Stuart Mill Prize in Tropical Medicine.
The Stuart Mill Prize in Tropical Medicine was founded at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in 1909.
- One prize may be awarded in each session for proficiency in Tropical Medicine
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Electives.
- The Prize is awarded on the basis of a country study relating to Tropical Medicine undertaken during the Year 6 Elective period and submitted as part of the academic requirements of the placement.
- The value of the prize is £100.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The awards are announced in June.
Year 6 Specialty Prize in General Practice - William & Edith Ryman Prize
Founded at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1975 by Professor Brenda E Ryman in memory of her parents. Funded by UCL Medical School from 2020.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education (Community and Primary Care).
- The prize is awarded to the student(s) who present the best Primary Care Quality improvement project in the Year 6 Core General Practice attachment.
- The value of the Prize is £100.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in June.
Year 6 Specialty Prize in Population & Health Care Sciences – Shaper Prize
The Shaper Prize was founded at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1993 in honour of Professor AG Shaper, (Head of Department).
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education (Community and Primary Care).
- The prize is awarded to the student(s) who present the best Primary Care Quality improvement project in the Year 6 Core General Practice attachment.
- The value of the Prize is £100.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in June.
