Medical School Project Prize (Laboratory-based) – Professor H.A.B. Simons Prize
Founded at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in 1986 by Dr TJR Simons in memory of his father as a prize for scientific research.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Year 3.
- The prize is open for competition among students reading for the MBBS degrees at UCL Medical School.
- Students obtaining First Class Honours after completing the intercalated year are eligible.
- The award is made on the basis of an outstanding laboratory-based IBSc project.
- Nominations are made in the form of a citation submitted by the Programme Lead to medsch.mbbsy3@ucl.ac.uk by the end of June each year. The citation should be a maximum of 150 words detailing why the nominated student should receive the award and a transcript of the student’s marks. The citation can highlight their academic achievements during their IBSc year, their research project and positive contributions they may have made to their peer group, programme and/or the wider UCL community.
- The award is determined by the Academic Lead for Year 3 on the basis of a review of the IBSc projects and citations.
- The value of the award is £125.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced at the end of December.
Medical School Project Prize (Non laboratory- based) - Professor Dame Jane Dacre Prize
Established at UCL Medical School in 2014 in recognition of Professor Dame Jane Dacre, the first female Director of the Medical School from 2010 - 2014, on her appointment as President of the Royal College of Physicians.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The prize is awarded by Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Year 3.
- The prize is open for competition among students reading for the MBBS degrees at UCL Medical School.
- Students obtaining First Class Honours after completing the intercalated year are eligible.
- The award is made on the basis of an outstanding non laboratory-based IBSc project.
- Nominations are made in the form of a citation from the Programme Lead submitted to medsch.mbbsy3@ucl.ac.uk by the end of June each year. Programme Prize for Anatomy - Asher Prize
The Asher Prize in Anatomy was endowed in 1938 by the late Samuel Garcia Asher, a Vice-President of University College Hospital and Chairman of the Medical School as a Scholarship for Anatomy and awarded in MBBS Part I Structural and Developmental Biology. The prize has been awarded for an Intercalated BSc in Anatomy since the introduction of the integrated MBBS curriculum and assessments in 2000.
- One award may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Anatomy.
- The Prize is awarded for outstanding performance in the Intercalated B.Sc. degree in Anatomy.
- The prize is open for competition among students reading for the MBBS degrees at UCL Medical School.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £300.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in June.
Programme Prize for Cardiovascular Science – Shelia Glennis Haworth Prize
The prize is named after Prof Shelia Glennis Haworth who was a British paediatric cardiologist and former academic at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. She specialised in pulmonary hypertension in children, and established the UK Paediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Service.
The prize is awarded for best overall performance in the iBSc in Cardiovascular Science. Normally the minimum requirement is a first class mark in every module taken on the programme and/or is based on a ranking score of performance for modules taken on the programme.
Programme Prize for Clinical Neurology & Brain Sciences
The iBSc Clinical Neurology & Brain Sciences Prize is awarded to the overall top student with the highest scoring marks on summative assessments over the whole course.
Clinical Neurology & Brain Sciences Dissertation Award
The iBSc Clinical Neurology and Brain Sciences Dissertation Prize is awarded to the student with the highest scoring dissertation mark (excluding the winner of the Clinical Neurology & Brain Sciences Prize).
Programme Prize for Clinical Sciences
- Highest overall performance in iBSc
- iBSc Project Prize: highest marks within the elements that make up the project (ie the written project, supervisor’s report and presentation/viva), and also needs to be particularly outstanding/ special.
Programme Prize for Global Health - John Yudkin Prize
The Prize is awarded annually to a medical student on the intercalated International Health BSc who shows an outstanding commitment to global health advocacy in parallel to their IBSc studies by demonstrating how their advocacy efforts have contributed to changing people's perceptions on a global health issue and how those changes were achieved, and which might include lobbying politicians; mobilization of a critical mass of like-minded people; and collaborating with actors in the UK and worldwide.
The prize winner will demonstrate why this particular global health issue was such an important one to campaign for and the anticipated future outcomes of their campaigning efforts.
Programme Prize for Human Genetics – Harold and Olga Fox Prize
- Awarded to students of outstanding merit.
Programme Prize for Immunology, Infection and Cell Pathology
- Highest overall performance in IBSc.
Project Prize for Immunology, Infection and Cell Pathology
- Highest marks within the elements that make up the project (ie the written project, supervisor’s report and presentation/viva), and also needs to be particularly outstanding/ special.
Programme Prize for Medical Anthropology – Murray Last Prize
- Awarded to the student with the highest overall mark with a tie being determined by marks on the IBSc year.
Programme Prize for Medical Physics and Bioengineering – Sidney Russ Prize
- Best overall performance in the IBSc.
Programme Prize for Neuroscience – Charlotte Dixon Prize
Medical School Prize: The Charlotte Dixon Memorial Prize was founded in 1978 in memory of Charlotte Dixon, who entered the Middlesex Hospital Medical School as a student in October 1976 and died in June 1978. The endowment was for performance in Neurology and funds two prizes: overall performance in MBBS Year 2 in which Neurology has been examined since the introduction of the 2000 integrated curriculum and a prize for an IBSc in Neurosciences.
- One award may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Neurosciences.
- The Prize is awarded for outstanding performance in the Intercalated B.Sc. degree in Neuroscience.
- The prize is open for competition among students reading for the MBBS degrees at UCL Medical School.
- No application is necessary.
- The value of the prize is £200.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is announced in June
Programme Prize for Orthopaedic Science –Scales Prize
- The “Scales Prize” will be awarded for the best overall student on the IBSc Orthopaedic Science Course and is a prestigious award.
- The award consists of a medal, certificate and a cash prize.
- The winning student will present their research project results at a Musculoskeletal Seminar in the autumn when the award will be presented.
- This award was founded in 1998.
Leadership Prize – Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Academic Leadership Award
- The IOMS Academic Leadership Award is donated by the UCL Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science to the student who makes an outstanding contribution in promoting high quality academic attainment across the student body through leadership and collegiality.
- The award consists of a certificate and a cash prize.
- The winner is elected by the students themselves.

Project Prize for Surgical Sciences
- The Prize is awarded for outstanding performance in the project component of the Intercalated BSc degree in Surgical Sciences.
Programme Prize for Women’s Health – Aalim Bibi Prizes
An IBSc and and IBSc project prize were created in 2017 in memory of Aalim Bibi, who tragically lost her life during childbirth in Ferozepur, close to the present Indo-Pakistani border. In Arabic, the name Aalim means 'the woman who has knowledge', and the prizes were established by her grandson to create a lasting legacy for her. They reward excellent students enrolled on the iBSc programme at the UCL Institute for Women's Health whose studies will lead to a deeper knowledge of women’s health in order to make a real difference in the future.
