Essay Prize on the Scientific Basis of Medicine (Years 1,2,4,5,6)
John Jepson Memorial Prize
Founded at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1977 in memory of the late John B. Jepson, Professor of Biochemistry.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of a Committee chaired by the Professor of Biochemistry.
- The Prize is open to students in all years of the MBBS course.
- The Prize is awarded annually on the result of an essay competition (not exceeding 4000 words) on a subject deemed by the Committee to fall within the general theme of 'The Scientific Basis of Medicine'.
- Entries must be uploaded to the MBBS Medical School Essays page on Moodle by the end of August.
- The value of the Prize is £500.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is normally announced in September.

Essay Prize in ENT (Years 4 & 5)
Geoffrey Duveen Prize in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology
The Geoffrey Duveen Prize was founded in 1948 by the Medical School of University College Hospital Medical School in recognition of Sir Geoffrey Duveen's services to the Royal Ear Hospital and supplemented in 1985 by a donation from Mr J G Fraser, Consultant at the Royal Ear Hospital. Funded by UCL Medical School from 2020.
- One Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of a nominated ENT consultant with responsibility for undergraduate teaching.
- The prize is awarded annually on the result of an essay (not exceeding 2,000 words) on an ENT surgery or medicine topic chosen by an ENT consultant.
- The Prize is open to students in Years 4 and 5 of the MBBS programme.
- The essay title will be announced at the start of the academic session.
- Entries must be uploaded to the MBBS Medical School Essays page on Moodle by the end of August.
- The value of the Prize is £100.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is normally announced in September.

Essay Prize in Neurology (Years 4 & 5)
F.M.R. Walshe Prize
The F.M.R. Walshe Prize was founded in 1952 to commemorate Sir Francis Walshe's distinguished services to neurology in University College Hospital and Medical School, and was originally awarded as an essay prize in Neurology.
- One Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Neurology.
- The Prize is awarded for an essay, not exceeding 5,000 words in length, on any aspect of neurology studied during Year 4 of the MBBS course.
- The Prize is open to students in Years 4 and 5 of the MBBS course.
- Entries must be uploaded to the MBBS Medical School Essays page on Moodle by the end of August in the year of application.
- The value of the prize is £150.
- The award will be accompanied by a certificate
- The award is normally announced in September.

2nd Prize in Neurology (Years 4,5) - Wilfred Francis White Prize
The Wilfred Francis White Prize in Neurology was founded at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1977 by Mrs Esther Frances White in memory of her husband.
- One Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Neurology.
- The Prize is awarded for an essay, not exceeding 5,000 words in length, on any aspect of neurology studied during Year 4 of the MBBS course.
- The Prize is open to students in Years 4 and 5 of the MBBS course.
- Entries must be uploaded to the MBBS Medical School Essays page on Moodle by the end of August in the year of application.

Essay Prize in Neurosurgery (Years 4 & 5)
The Howard Murray Memorial Prize
The Howard Murray Memorial Prize was founded in 1954 by Mr H H Murray in memory of his son, Howard B Murray, who was a student of University College Hospital Dental School at the time of his death. The prize was transferred to the Medical School in 1991.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Academic Lead for Neurosurgery.
- The Prize is awarded for an essay, not exceeding 5,000 words in length, on any aspect of neurosurgery studied during the MBBS course.
- The Prize is open to students in Years 4 and 5 of the MBBS course.

Essay Prize in Peripheral Vascular Surgery (Years 4 & 5)
Dorothy Adie Stoy Prize
Founded in 1998 under a bequest made by Miss Dorothy Adie Stoy in gratitude for the surgical skill and care afforded to her by Mr David Bailey and Mr Mohan Adiseshiah of the Vascular Arterial Unit at UCL Hospitals
- One Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of a nominated vascular surgeon with responsibility for undergraduate teaching.
- The prize is awarded annually on the result of an essay (not exceeding 2,000 words) on a subject in peripheral vascular surgery which shall be decided each year by one of the vascular surgeons.
- The Prize is open to students in Years 4 and 5 of the MBBS course.
- The essay title will be announced at the start of the academic session.
- Entries must be uploaded to the MBBS Medical School Essays page on Moodle by the end of August.
- The value of the Prize is £75.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award is normally announced in September.

Essay Prize in Respiratory Medicine (Years 4 & 5)
The Horace Joules Prize
The Horace Joules prizes were established in honour of the late Dr Horace Joules, a graduate of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School , physician to Central Middlesex Hospital for nearly 30 years, distinguished teacher and celebrated champion of social and preventive medicine. The Horace Joules Prize in Respiratory Medicine was introduced in 1994.
- One prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of UCL Medical School on the advice of two respiratory physicians.
- The Prize is open to students in Years 4 and 5 of the MBBS course.
- The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who in the opinion of the judges writes the best essay, not exceeding 2,000 words, on a respiratory topic chosen by a respiratory physician.
- The examiners reserve the right to hold clinical or viva examinations for selected candidates.
- The essay title will be announced at the start of the academic session.
- Entries must be uploaded to the MBBS Medical School Essays page on Moodle by the end of August.
- The value of the prize is £150.

Essay Prize in Surgery (Years 4 & 5)
Sydney Long Prize in Surgery
Founded at University College Medical School in 1982 by Professor Cyril Long.
- One Prize may be awarded in each session.
- The Prize is awarded by the Medical School on the recommendation of the Professor of Surgery and one or more of his colleagues.
- The competition shall consist of a dissertation on a topic which shall be decided by the Professor of Surgery and which may be based upon a care report (or reports). Alternatively, the topic may relate to an area of clinical research in surgery. The dissertation should not exceed 4000 words.
- The Prize is open to students in Years 4 and 5 of the MBBS course.
- The essay title will be announced at the start of the academic session.
- Entries must be uploaded MBBS Medical School Essays page on Moodle by the end of August.
- The value of the Prize is £250.
- The award is accompanied by a certificate.
- The award will be announced at the end of September.
