EEC Network Meeting Summer 2025
The 22nd meeting of the EEC was held in June/July 2025 in central London attended by 133 delegates from 24 countries, with many more attending on Zoom. The focus was on improving survival for patients with multi-metastatic Ewing sarcoma and we were privileged to host leading researchers in the field, Poul Sorensen, Oliver Delattre and Patrick Grohar who gave fascinating talks.
Patient advocates played a key role, leading a session on consent for biological samples and contributing to the discussions over the two days. The EEC was very glad to join forces with the Bone Cancer Research biology-focussed meeting, Advances in Ewing Sarcoma Research, which followed the EEC meeting on 2nd July.

Musculoskeletal Pathology Course 2018
Date: 16th -20th April 2018
Location: Bologna
The Course consisted of a 5-day update on management of bone and soft tissue tumors, with particular emphasis on clinico-pathologic and radiographic correlations including practical studies under microscope. It was addressed to orthopaedic surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and basic researchers to improve their knowledge and competence in these pathologies by working in multidisciplinary teams. The format included interactive sessions for questions, case presentations and an early morning interactive session of multiple choice questions reviewing the topics previously discussed. The last day, participants were grouped in multidisciplinary teams to discuss a clinical case. The best teams were awarded a prize.

Paper published in JCP by Ornella Gonzato, EEC patient expert
Ornella Gonzato, an EEC patient expert based in Italy has written a paper on the patient perspective on access to innovative drugs and how access should not just be limited to patients with the more common cancers. She discusses the issues, interdependencies and risk-sharing. She summarises that the ‘core driver’ from the patient point of view is that: “When you are faced with a rare cancer, you really can’t wait.” The paper is called ‘The new risk-sharing paradigm in rare cancers: Patient perspective’ and was published in the Journal of Cancer Policy.

EEC are supporting Unite2Cure in their campaign to improve access to new drugs for trials in young people
The EURO EWING Consortium supports the Unite2Cure campaign to change European Paediatric Medicine Regulation as there is a need for better access to allow testing of new treatments for rare cancers like Ewing sarcoma, that mainly affect young people. Survival rates have not improved for 25 years and so new drugs and innovative trials are needed to make sure that more people are cured from this rare cancer.

Patient experts Chris Copland, Ornella Gonzato and Lindsey Bennister gave their perspective on 'how to construct and perform informative bone sarcoma trials if and when a new drug emerges' at the 3rd European Bone Sarcoma Networking Meeting in Vienna, Austria.
