Many doctors do not have the knowledge or skills to use the so-called ‘Improvement Science’ methods which are commonplace in many other sectors. Advocates of systematic improvement claim that these methods provide the answer to the persistent quality problems found in the NHS. Critics challenge this enthusiasm and ask for evidence that improvement science is indeed a science-based activity. In this session Professor Martin Marshall will explore the promise, the achievements and the challenges of the science of improvement.
