Centre for Medical Imaging

The Centre for Medical Imaging sits within the Division of Medicine and is the focus for clinical radiology research at UCLH. The Centre includes clinical radiologists, medical physicists, administrators, and a variety of ever-changing research assistants and research fellows. We have particular research interests in the application of multimodality high technology imaging platforms to the clinical areas of gastrointestinal, oncological, musculoskeletal and neurological disease. These clinical themes are supported by medical physicists and there are multi-disciplinary links with researchers in statistical methodology, health economics, modeling, health psychology, medical image computing, and pre-clinical imaging, both at UCL and beyond.

The Centre has access to an unparalleled range of platforms for human imaging including several clinical multi-detector row CT and MR scanners, a 3T Philips research magnet, and a Philips interventional 3T magnet and Siemens PET/MRI – the latter two installed in the UCLH Cancer Centre in 2011.

The Centre is a leading UK focus for academic clinical radiology, with two Professors (both of whom are NIHR Senior Investigators), two senior lecturers, and several NHS colleagues. The Centre has a full complement of NIHR Academic Clinical Fellows (ACF) and Academic Clinical Lecturers who are joined by those radiology SpRs from the UCLH training scheme who also wish to focus on research.

The NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme is a major funder of our research due to its focus on pragmatic trials of high technology imaging platforms in the NHS. Our funding has resulted in substantial volumes of peer-reviewed indexed-publications.
