Title: Skeletal Muscle MRI – A Great Potential to be Exploited
Abstract:
Skeletal muscle MRI is emerging as a valid non-invasive alternative to investigate muscle tissue properties thanks to its ability to provide anatomical, morphological, functional and microstructural information. The talk will first introduce the topic by describing the current trends and applications as reported in the recent reference scientific literature. After that, the work of Dr. Mastropietro and colleagues, especially in the study of muscle perfusion by MRI, will be summarized. Finally, the potential role of “MRI muscle biopsy” in the study of pathophysiological changes occurring in muscle fibers will be presented. The main aim of the talk is to foster and improve scientific collaborations on this fascinating topic.
Bio:
Alfonso Mastropietro is a researcher at the National Research Council (Italy). He received his Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2009 from Politecnico di Milano. In 2013 he obtained his European Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the same institution. His activities are mainly focused on the development and application of biomedical image processing and analysis methods, with a particular interest in MRI analysis for the extraction of quantitative indices through advanced techniques, such as diffusion MRI (e.g., DTI, CSD, IVIM, Tractography, NODDI), water-fat imaging (e.g., DIXON) and Relaxometry for cerebral and muscular tissue.
