Title:  Multi-task stereo disparity estimation and surgical instrument segmentation

Abstract
Reconstructing the 3D geometry of the surgical site and segmenting instruments within it are important tasks for surgical navigation systems and for robotic surgery automation. Traditional approaches treat each problem in isolation and do not account for the intrinsic relationship between surgical tool segmentation and stereo matching. In this talk, we present a multi-task CNN, designed to jointly estimate disparity and binary tool segmentation masks. We demonstrate key benefits of our architecture including cross-task domain adaptation and reduction in runtime requirements compared to single-task models.
