Title: Translating predictive models for Alzheimer’s Disease to clinical practice
Abstract:
Clinical specialists in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) can be supported in making sense of data heterogeneity by new computational methods, such as predictive models. They offer unprecedented potential to guide decision making and clinical management, but often fail when translated to the clinical setting, due to lack in considering human factors and context characteristics.
In this talk, I will first introduce my Ph.D. project, which aims to translate an Event-Based Model for AD into a tool to support clinical decision-making. I adopted a user-centred design approach, initially clarifying clinical needs and practice. I will then focus on how I used these user requirements to design and test a prototype of a clinical decision-support system, icompass. This approach allowed a thorough understanding of clinical perceptions of the model’s potential and the intended use in the clinical setting, with minimal investment of technical resources in the first stages of prototype development. On the long term, it will promote adoption, by producing a tool that is tailored around users, each time refining the design, algorithm, and strategies to facilitate its integration within clinical practice.
