Training to teach

In a constantly evolving discipline, our teacher training enables your medical faculty and educators to give your future doctors the best possible start to their futures in medicine.

Medicine is always evolving and progressing. It is vital for medical educators to remain up to date and to develop the tools they need to train the next generation of medical experts.

At UCL, we have a proud tradition of medical faculty development, helping academics and clinicians to develop and improve their teaching skills and techniques.

The training we deliver can including curriculum development, assessment, teaching techniques, course management and developing medical English (spoken and written), as well as mentoring support.

Our training to teach course

Our two-day training to teach course has been delivered to thousands of doctors across the world.

It covers the fundamental principles and practice of planning, constructing, and delivering a teaching session.

We also offer extension modules, such as training in bedside teaching, and techniques for lecturing to large audiences.

Our modules

  • Principles of education
  • Interaction in teaching
  • Questioning techniques
  • Feedback and evaluation
  • Lesson planning
  • Written assessment: writing valid exam questions
  • Clinical assessment: setting up a clinical exam
  • Communication skills: listening, breaking bad news
  • E-learning
  • Change management.

We can tailor any programme to your requirements.

Our work with Ningbo University

We have a longstanding partnership with Ningbo University to deliver in-depth faculty development programmes. Each programme accommodates 16 doctors and takes place over 12 weeks in London.

A tailored plan of top-class training, delivered in London

Participants attend a range of teaching and learning sessions at UCL, from curriculum development to teaching techniques. They also attend clinical observation placements at our world-class partner teaching hospitals in London.

Our mentoring support provides regular progress reviews and gives participants access to a supportive individual throughout the programme. Participants can also observe UCL medical students in various types of learning sessions and interact with them.

We are honoured to establish a partnership with UCL's world-class medical school. UCL formulated a tailored training plan for us, which completely met our needs. The hard working and thoughtful arrangements of professional, effective, and helpful staff ensures the quality of this programme. To date, 121 doctors have been trained at UCL. According to the doctors' feedback, this programme is much better than other training programmes they have ever had.
