Graduate Diploma in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

The Graduate Diploma in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering will provide training in many aspects of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering not found in Mechanical, Electrical and Aerospace undergraduate degrees. It provides a firm foundation for subsequent study on the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s MSc Naval Architecture and MSc Marine Engineering programmes.

The Graduate Diploma in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering mirrors the structure of the third year of the BEng/MEng Engineering (Mechanical) programmes, including three modules from the Integrated Engineering Programme’s Ocean Engineering minor stream.

You will develop the fundamental analytical and design skills necessary to become a professional mechanical engineer in your chosen field of employment, whether in industry or in a consulting/research organisation.

Learning and Assessment

You will be taught in a variety of ways, including lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes, computer workshops and project work. Along with our computing facilities we have extensive equipment and apparatus, housed in our main laboratories, which are used for taught laboratory classes and for your project work.

Subject-Specific Knowledge and understanding is acquired through a combination of lectures, tutorials, individual project and group projects, design projects, practical laboratory work and coursework assignments.

Intellectual, Academic and Research Skills are acquired through a combination of lectures, tutorials, group work, a major individual project, design projects, practical laboratory work and coursework assignments.

Practical and Transferrable Skills are acquired through workshop practice, individual projects, design projects, practical laboratory work and coursework assignments.

On completion of this programme:

Subject-Specific Knowledge

You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  1. underpinning mathematics and engineering science associated with a career in marine environment
  2. specific subject areas and associated research directed towards advanced and emerging technologies, as well as developing an understanding of concepts from a range of areas peripheral to propulsive marine systems engineering
  3. the requirement to communicate effectively in both formal report writing and in oral presentations

Intellectual, Academic and Research Skills

You will be able to demonstrate:

  1. The ability to successfully undertake a design or research project, taking account of constraints such as time, cost, health and safety as well as environmental issues.
  2. The skills associated with rational and objective decision making arising from conducting a substantial engineering based research project.
  3. The ability to make general evaluations of commercial risk.
  4. The ability to identify and implement appropriate information and communication technology solutions.
  5. The means to develop and exercise written and oral communication skills in preparation for a professional engineering career.

Practical and Transferrable Skills

You will be able to:

  1. Successfully undertake a major design or research project, taking account of constraints such as time, cost, health and safety as well as environmental issues.
  2. Develop and exercise written and oral communication skills in preparation for a professional engineering career.
