Research summary

Professor Manish K Tiwari’s heads Nanoengineered Systems Laboratory in UCL Mechanical Engineering and is also a platform lead in the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences. His activities centre around investigating micro/nanoscale manufacturing and transport phenomena for energy and healthcare applications. His group’s expertise includes fundamentals of small scale thermofluidics, multiphase transport and rheology, novel nanomanufacturing, and advanced material physics and characterization. Most of his research is cross-disciplinary and involves active collaborations with clinicians, mathematicians, chemists, physicists and of course engineers with complementary expertise. A few examples of  Prof. Tiwari’s recent research activities include:

  • Nanoengineered surfaces for robust and energy efficient anti-icing and control of liquid condensation
  • High-resolution 3D printing and nanomanufacturing and for healthcare sensors
  • Antimicrobial coatings and fluidics assisted diagnostics technologies for antimicrobial resistance challenge
  • 3D nanostructures for nanoelectronics, cellular transduction and other biomedical applications
  • Energy efficient cooling and thermal management of microprocessors, data centers and power electronics, avionics and solar cells, include technologies for using low-grade/waste heat
  • Fundamental micro- and nanofluidics, and flow diagnostics technologies
  • Rheology of complex suspensions and nanomechanics

Biography

Manish K Tiwari is a Professor of Nanoengineering in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University College London. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2009. After graduating, he first did his postdoctoral research in the Laboratory of Thermodynamics in Emerging Technologies at ETH Zurich. After two years as a postdoc, he became a Group Leader in the same Laboratory and stayed on at ETH Zurich for two more years. He joined UCL in late 2013 as a Lecturer and became a Professor in 2018.

Prof. Tiwari’s research focuses on interfaces - encompassing broad areas of small scale manufacturing and transport phenomena with an emphasis on developing new energy and healthcare technologies. He has published papers in high quality journals such as Nature Materials, Nature Communications, PNAS, Nano Letters etc. He is an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant Awardee and a member of EPSRC Early Career Forum in Manufacturing Research.
