UCL teams win IMechE Design Challenge Greater London Regional Final
21 April 2022
UCL Mechanical Engineering student teams have won both the first and second-year Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Design Challenge Competition for the Greater London region.
The two-day event hosted by the University of Hertfordshire saw teams compete with student-designed “Line Launcher” devices required to accurately fire squash balls over a range of distances. Along with prizes for best design, poster and presentation, the regional final culminated in a head-to-head competition where teams' devices had to fire at multiple targets with maximum accuracy.
UCL Mechanical Engineering entered four teams into the event and brought home six prizes, plus the coveted first and second-year top prizes. The winning teams will now progress to the national final of the competition, which will be held at the IMechE in October.
Welcoming the news, Dr Tom Peach, First-Year Design Lecturer, said:
“We are so proud of our students’ successes in the Design Challenge London final! As well as being an incredibly fun event, the competition teaches so many important real-world engineering skills needed to design and manufacture within a budget and limited timeline. The standard of all competing teams was really impressive this year and the level of enthusiasm to be competing back in person just couldn’t be beaten.”
