Work Experience at UCL Mechanical Engineering

Learn about how you can get hands-on experience in Engineering through our Work Experience Scheme.

Work experience is a fantastic opportunity for secondary school students to explore the professional world of engineering. At UCL Mechanical Engineering, we offer students in Years 10 to 12 the chance to spend a week gaining practical experience, learning essential skills, and discovering what a career in engineering could look like.

Through our structured programme, students will:

  • Gain exposure to real engineering projects
  • Develop problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Engage in hands-on activities using industry-standard tools and software
  • Interact with UCL students, researchers, and professionals
  • Strengthen their CVs and university applications

What to Expect

During the placement, students will take part in a variety of activities designed to enhance their understanding of engineering concepts. Key tasks include:

  • Practical Engineering: Building a toolmaker’s clamp, learning to use professional tools, and understanding precision manufacturing.
  • Design & Innovation: Developing and prototyping a mobile phone stand with passive sound amplification using Fusion 360 software.
  • Insight into University Life: Using cutting-edge engineering simulators, observing student projects like UCL Formula Student, and engaging with researchers.

The experience concludes with a presentation of their work, discussions with supervisors, and a certificate of attendance.

Feedback from work experience Summer 2024:

‘I have always had an interest in engineering, and this work experience showed promise of helping me figure out whether it was the field I wanted to go into or not’

‘I had done some research and saw the variety of facilities available at UCL regarding engineering also the teams like UCL formula student, Mars Rover and eco marathon seemed interesting.’

‘I personally enjoyed the design process the most. The act of brainstorming problems and creating engineering solutions was quite engaging, despite our lack of time’ I learnt a lot about how products and designed and assembled
