Description of Project:
Hemispherectomy is one of several surgical treatment options forintractable childhood epilepsy. Although a wealth of literature documentslinguistic function after this procedure, little is known about theintegrity of non verbal cognition in these patients. A large battery ofneuropsychological tests were used to characterise the nature and extentof visual cognitive impairment in hemispherectomised patients, and todetermine whether any differences were apparent according to side ofhemispheric injury. Differences were not expected due to the plasticity ofthe developing brain. The results were consistent with this hypothesis.
