Induction Week For First Years

PROVISIONAL

First year Mathematics: Induction week 23 - 27 September 2013

Induction talk on College computing facilities (for all students on maths degrees): these will be available every half hour from 11.00 to 2.30 on Tuesday 24th, Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th in the J Z Young Lecture Theatre. Please go to one session.

All first-year students reading for a maths degree (single or combined honours) should attend all the events listed below.


MONDAY 23 SEPTEMBER

9.00 – 11.30 Christopher Ingold Auditorium (Christopher Ingold Building)
Departmental Induction, Welcome to Department and Group work

(i) Departmental Registration. You will receive an information pack, and complete Departmental Registration.
(ii) Welcome to department. Prof Robb McDonald (Head of Department), Dr Robert Bowles (Admissions Tutor) and Dr Mark Roberts (Departmental Tutor) will introduce themselves and talk about the course. Representative from ADM (UCL Maths) Society will appear briefly.
(iii) Group work. You will then be divided into your small tutor groups, and asked to work together on some problems.

11.30 – 12.00 Christopher Ingold Auditorium (Christopher Ingold Building)
Meet your mentors

2.00 – 2.30 Tutors' offices (25 Gordon Street and Kathleen Lonsdale Building)
Visit to personal tutors

You will go to your tutorial groups to meet your personal tutor. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.


TUESDAY 24 SEPTEMBER

College Registration

This is your formal registration with the college: You must complete the enrolment process before you will be permitted to gain access to the computing facilities and UCL Library. You will not be a UCL student until you have completed the enrolment process. You will be required to prove your identity, complete your enrolment form, pay your fees if you have not yet done so (or provide evidence of sponsorship) and obtain your UCL ID card. So please ensure you come prepared to do so. All students will be required to present an accepted form of identification (preferably a valid passport) before they can be enrolled. Overseas students requiring a visa must present a valid original passport and must also bring a legible photocopy of their personal details page and the visa page of their passport. For UK/EU/EEA students, photo driving license, Identity card etc will be one of the accepted forms of identification, in the absence of a valid passport.

If you are an overseas student, you may have already completed this process during the International Students Orientation Programme in the week preceding term.


WEDNESDAY 25 SEPTEMBER

10.30 – 12.00 Bloomsbury Theatre
Transition Programme Information Session

This will include information on Finance and bursaries, Budgeting, Rights and Advice, accommodation issues, Clubs and Societies, Volunteering at UCL (UCL Students’ Union), Student Ambassadors Scheme, Tutoring and Mentoring Scheme (Widening Participation Unit), Health Services (Gower Place Surgery) and Counselling Service.

1.00 – 1.50 Cruciform Lecture Theatre 1 (Cruciform Building)
Test

This is a short test of basic mathematics, designed to give us an idea of your starting level. You will have to pass a similar test as part of the MATH1401 module later in the term.

THURSDAY 26 SEPTEMBER

Library Visits - 3rd floor of the DMS Watson Library, by the main staircase (its on the right just as you enter the library)

There will be 7 sessions run in groups for students at 1.30, 2.00, 2.30, 3.00, 3.30, 4.00, and 4.30. Please see the information distributed at the departmental registration.

1st YEAR MATHEMATICS LECTURES START ON MONDAY 30 SEPTEMBER. If you are doing a combined degree it is possible that lectures in the other department(s) may start sooner.

* Note: There will be a freshers' barbeque for 1st year Mathematics students in the subsequent week on Friday 04 October from 5.30pm - 9.00pm in the Wilkins Front Quad, on the main Gower Street site, organised by ADM Maths Society. In case of rain, this event will be held in the Wilkins North Cloisters, Wilkins Building.

Also please note, on Wednesday 02 October at 1pm the UCL photographer will be at the Front Quad, Wilkins Building, to take the 2013-14 Departmental Photograph of all staff and students in the Department.
