Admissions (MPhil/PhD)

Before you Apply

Before applying, you should identify one or more potential supervisors in the department and contact them informally to determine if they might be interested in supervising you. You can learn more about the research conducted in the department and explore our staff members' research interests by visiting the department's research webpage.

How to Apply

Applications must be made online through the following system:

You should select Research Degree: Mathematics (degree code RRDMATSING01). Questions about the Admissions system should be addressed to the UCL Graduate Admissions Office.

NB: You must state your proposed supervisor(s) on your application.

In most cases it is not necessary to provide a research proposal, but if in doubt you should discuss this with your proposed supervisor(s). Note that we automatically consider all competitive applicantions for relevant sources of funding. For information about sources of funding, see the Available Funding webpage.

Interviews

If we are interested in taking your application further we will invite you to an interview. The aim of the interview is to explore your motivation for research and to test your mathematical potential and your understanding of your chosen field. You can expect to be asked some technical questions about topics that you've studied, including any research projects or dissertations mentioned in your application.

Interviews are usually held online.

Deadlines

Applications are accepted at any point of the year but the ideal time to apply is November/December. Our available funding is usually allocated by March/April so if you apply later than this you will have a low chance of securing funding for the next academic year.

Entrance Requirements

The minimum required qualification is an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or other relevant subject, or an equivalent qualification from another country. Successful applicants accepted onto the programme usually hold an MSc or MSci degree (or equivalent) at merit or distinction level.

All students are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language - click here for further information about the English Language Requirements.

Formal entrance requirements are handled by the Graduate Admissions Office - click here for further information.

Overseas Applicants

We welcome applications from both UK and overseas students.
