Dept News, May 2017

Athena SWAN Silver award for the department.

I am delighted that the department's commitment to the recruitment and progression of its female students and staff has been recognised by an Athena SWAN Silver award.  I believe our sustained record of achievement can be traced back some 25 years to former colleague Bill Stephenson's pioneering 'Women in Mathematics' day aimed at encouraging aspiring female mathematicians to study at UCL; an event that, remarkably, has run almost every year
since.

I am grateful to members, past and present, of the department's Athena SWAN team who have enthusiastically formulated, developed and implemented a series of actions and good practice to the benefit of all staff and students, and also to the wider membership of the department for embracing these. Many people outside the department have helped us reflect on our practices and provide support and guidance, especially UCL's HR Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team and the London Mathematical Society's Women in Mathematics Committee. There is still much to do and we look forward to working with UCL colleagues and the UK mathematical community in further developing good practice to the benefit of all.
