Workshop on Geometrically Unfitted Finite Element Methods, 6-8 January 2016

Many applications in engineering and bio medical science have a strong multi physics character. Examples include flow in fractured media, flow in the cardiovascular system, multi phase flow with surfactants.

In this advanced models different equations reflecting different physics, material properties, or modeling of phenomena on different scales, are used in different subsets of the domain. These subsets may be manifolds with different dimensionality that evolve in time. The computational modelling of such systems pose an outstanding challenge. The geometrical complexity leads to a difficult meshing problem that may have to be solved repeatedly during the computation if time dependent equations are considered or an inverse problem is solved.

A recent approach is to use so called unfitted finite element methods, or cut finite element methods, where the mesh is fixed and not designed to respect all geometrical features of the problem. Instead coupling conditions are built into the computational method in a fashion so that robustness and accuracy can be guaranteed.

This workshop is consecrated to this class of methods and methods for related important applications such as fluid structure interaction, contact problems and crack propagation.
