Year 1 Summer Projects
Year 1 Summer Projects are optional three-week, in person experiences at the end of May-June, giving students the chance to explore new mathematics, and collaborate in supervised peer groups.
There will be a wide range of projects to choose from and you will be able to express any preferences about who you want to work with. While we can't guarantee everyone will get their first choice projects and groups, we will try to ensure everyone is given a project and a group they are happy with.
Projects are divided into three areas: Applied and Financial Mathematics (topic leader: Riaz Ahmad), Analysis and Number Theory (topic leader: Niki Kalaydzhieva), Algebra (topic leader: Ruth Reynolds), and Programming (topic leader: Matthew Towers).
You will receive an email around the end of term 2 with instructions on what to do.
Project groups are allocated a supervisor, usually one of UCL's PhD students, with expertise in the project area. You will meet with the supervisor for up to 2 hours per
week during the three weeks of the project period. Meetings take place in person, and you must be present on campus for the three week project period.
Presentations take place on the last two days of the project period. Groups will give a short presentation (about 20 minutes) on some of their project work to an audience of students and staff. Your supervisor can help you in choosing what to talk about and preparing your presentation.
