UCL Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching

UCL Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching…

Over the past 10 years, the National Academies Summer Institutes (SI) on Scientific Teaching have substantially changed the educational perspectives and teaching practices of SI participants toward more student-centered approaches.

This summer for the first time a team of four National Academies SI leaders will bring the Summer Institute experience to UCL for a 3-day workshop: June 21-23 2017. This will be a special program funded by UCL which will be designed following the SI structure.

The theme for the Summer Institute is "scientific teaching,” which simply means teaching using the scientific method and evidence-based practices. This workshop models the scientific teaching principles of active learning, assessment, and inclusive teaching. Activities include reflective writing, planning, reading, researching, discussing teaching methods and philosophy, interactive presentations, and developing teaching materials. By the end of the workshop, participants will have observed, evaluated, and collected a portfolio of innovative teaching approaches and instructional materials that are ready to be adopted and adapted to their own teaching environments.
