The role of the state in the promotion, regulation and shaping of science and technology, the idea of scientific autonomy, moral responsibility of the scientist and the commercialization of science.
Science Policy
The course will also focus on focus on current case studies; previous years topics have been geoengineering and biometric technologies. Attend one lecture plus one tutorial per week.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course students will:
- Be able to identify the main themes of science policy studies
- Be able to criticise simplistic and popular notions of the relationship between science, technology and society
- Have detailed knowledge of a number of case studies in science policy (and, in particular, the social and political dimensions of the cases)
- Have developed research skills through the seminar work and course assessment
